Xscape03/31/2014: "Xscape" Set For May 2014 Release

It was announced today that on May 13th Epic Records, in conjunction with the Estate of Michael Jackson, will release XSCAPE, an album of new music by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. XSCAPE is executive produced by Epic Records Chairman and CEO L.A. Reid. After mining by the Estate of Jackson’s archives, Reid was granted unlimited access to the treasures spanning four decades of material on which Jackson had completed his vocals. Reid then teamed up top producers to “contemporize” the songs while retaining Jackson’s essence and integrity, creating the best music you’ve never heard.

The list of producers include global hitmakers Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, Stargate and John McClain.

The new album will feature eight brand new recordings. A Deluxe Edition of XSCAPE will include a selection of the recordings in their original form. Both the standard and Deluxe Editions are available April 1st for pre-order on iTunes and elsewhere.

The title of this album honors Michael’s album naming process. He always chose a song from the album to name his projects and, beginning with THRILLER, used only one word titles, each with an edgy quality to them. This is true of the new project.

John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson said, “Michael was always on the cutting edge and was constantly reaching out to new producers, looking for new sounds. He was always relevant and current. These tracks, in many ways, capture that spirit. We thank L.A. Reid for his vision.”

Full press release below and more news about Michael Jackson’s upcoming album will be revealed in the coming weeks. Keep visiting for new details.

10/02/2013: AEG Live Found Not Liable In Michael's Death

In a resounding rebuke of claims that Michael Jackson died at the hands of his greedy concert promoters, a Los Angeles jury decided Wednesday the singer’s mom and kids don’t deserve a dime from AEG Live for his drug overdose in his bedroom.

The jury of six men and six women returned the verdict after four days of deliberation in the $1.5 billion wrongful-death lawsuit.

The panel decided AEG hired Dr. Conrad Murray, but the King of Pop’s own fancy footwork kept his use of the surgery-strength anesthetic propofol a secret from AEG Live. The jurors found the company had no reason to suspect a licensed doctor with no malpractice claims would violate his Hippocratic Oath with daredevil drug infusions.

The verdict capped five months of testimony in the closely watched case that exposed many secrets of the reclusive “Thriller” singer’s personal life and finances. Jackson was 50 when he died in June 2009.

“The jury’s decision completely vindicates AEG Live, confirming what we have known from the start — that although Michael Jackson’s death was a terrible tragedy, it was not a tragedy of AEG Live’s making,” said Marvin Putnam, the promoter’s lead attorney.

“What really happened behind those locked doors? That was between Michael Jackson and his physician.”

More than 50 witnesses, including Jackson’s eldest son, Prince, 16, and his ex-wife, Debbie Rowe, took the stand.

Rowe told jurors Jackson used propofol to sleep as far back as 1997, during his HIStory tour.

Jackson’s mother and brother, Randy Jackson, revealed they had staged drug interventions, which didn’t work.

“There was simply no evidence that anyone at AEG did anything wrong,” Putnam said.

He called the verdict a “great victory” for AEG Live, particularly its chief executive officer, Randy Phillips.

Phillips said the verdict was bittersweet.

“I counted Michael Jackson as a creative partner and a friend,” he said. “We lost one of the world’s greatest musical geniuses, but I am relieved and deeply grateful that the jury recognized that neither I, nor anyone else at AEG Live, played any part in Michael’s tragic death.”

Dan Beckerman — president and CEO of AEG Inc., the promoter’s parent company — also expressed relief over the jury’s decision.

“I am pleased that the jury recognized that this lawsuit was without merit, and the entire AEG family looks forward to putting this unfortunate chapter behind us,” Beckerman said

The late star’s mom, Katherine Jackson, 83, maintained a stoic demeanor as the verdict was announced about 3:30 p.m. Pacific time. She walked out of the courtroom, but once outside, got into a wheelchair with the help of her nephew, Trent Jackson.

She did not make a statement and had to leave it to her lawyer to accept bouquets of roses from die-hard Jackson fans who had gathered outside the courthouse.

“We of course are not happy with the result as it stands now,” said Kevin Boyle, one of Katherine Jackson’s lawyers.

Boyle said the family’s fight is not over.

“We will be exploring all options, legally and factually, and make a decision ... at a later time.”

The singer’s fans also slammed the verdict.

“This is a complete shock to Michael’s fans and Katherine’s supporters,” Karlene Taylor, who attended almost every day of the trial, told the Daily News.

She scoffed at the jury for finding Murray competent and AEG Live faultless for hiring him.

“The jurors probably need the definition of incompetence read to them,” Taylor said.

“Conrad Murray had a license, he graduated from an accredited college, and we felt he was competent to do the job of being a general practitioner,” Barden said. “Now that doesn’t mean that we thought he was ethical. Had the word ‘ethical’ been in the question, it could have been a different outcome.”

Barden said jurors were initially confused by Judge Yvette Palazuelos’ question of whether “Murray [was] unfit or incompetent to perform the work for which he was hired.” He said it took several votes, and in the end the panel voted 10-2 to answer “No.”

Under California law, only nine of the 12 jurors needed to agree to reach a verdict.

Barden said a key piece of evidence was the contract between Murray and AEG, which paid the doctor $150,000 a month.

“We reached a verdict we understand that not everybody is going to agree with,” Barden said. “There are really no winners in this. Somebody had to die for us to be here. It was really a tragic situation.”

Juror Kevin Smith said the evidence showed Jackson was responsible for his own death.

“Michael Jackson was used to getting his way,” Smith said. “He could pretty much get what he wanted ... Anybody that said ‘no’ was out of the mix and he’d find somebody else.”

Another juror, Bryant Carino, said it was a tough call.

“I heard stuff on both sides that made sense, but anyone who looked at the facts had to reach the same decision,” said Carino, after he and his fellow jurors met with Palazuelos behind closed doors for 20 minutes before they were dismissed.

“I’m sorry (Katherine Jackson) had to lose her son,” Carino said. “It’s a terrible tragedy one way or the other.”

During the trial, jurors also got a detailed look at Jackson’s personal spending and heard he was awash in debt and back taxes topping $400 million when he died

Jackson’s estate, which was not involved in the lawsuit, has nearly paid off the entertainer’s debt as revenue from his record sales and the documentary “This is It” skyrocketed following his death.

The singer’s mother and children have been getting stipends from the estate, which is also financing the heirs’ trust funds.

Katherine Jackson’s lead attorney, Brian Panish, built his case on the notion that AEG created a dangerous conflict of interest when it drafted a contract with Murray that pulled the plug on his generous salary if Jackson didn’t perform.

He said AEG executives saw the singer as simply a cash cow and failed to check on Murray’s dire financial distress or help Jackson as he deteriorated into a cold, emaciated basket case before their eyes.

Bad2511/15/2010: "Bad 25" Coming In September

New York, NY – Twenty-five years after the phrase “Who’s Bad” became a generation’s cultural catchphrase, Epic/Legacy Recordings, in collaboration with the Estate of Michael Jackson, will celebrate the legendary album and record breaking BAD tour on September 18, 2012 with the release of a deluxe package, BAD 25, which includes three CDs, two collectible booklets, and features the first ever authorized DVD release of a concert from the record breaking BAD tour.

“The era of BAD represented Michael’s creative ‘coming of age’ as a solo artist in charge of every aspect of his career – from recording to touring to endorsements to merchandising. This was the first album on which nearly all of the songs were written by Michael. It was also was the first album in history to produce five consecutive #1 singles and it took 2 ½ decades for another artist to match that success. It was also the first time Michael would tour as a solo artist - his vision, his decisions on what the show would be. The enormous success of the BAD album and tour was a pivotal moment in Michael’s growth as a composer, performer and producer cementing his role as the King of Pop. We are thrilled to celebrate such an historic era in Michael’s career with this release”, stated John Branca and John McClain, Co-Executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson.

The BAD 25 anniversary deluxe edition will feature three CDs and 1 DVD as follows:

On June 5 in the U.S. (June 4th ex-U.S.), Epic / Legacy Recordings will re-release the original first single from the album "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" as a CD Single with a previously unreleased bonus track from the BAD sessions, "Don't Be Messin' 'Round (demo)." This is a Wal-Mart exclusive CD single in the U.S. and will not be available digitally.

On June 26 a replica edition of the original 7" vinyl of this single with the original B-side "Baby Be Mine" will be made available to the world. The first single for BAD, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” was originally released on 7" vinyl in 1987. The 7" single edit of the song has only been available on that original 7" vinyl until now.

Recently, Pepsi announced an exclusive global partnership with the Estate of Michael Jackson as part of its new “Live for Now” campaign. Starting this month, Michael Jackson and Pepsi fans in more than 20 countries around the world will experience this partnership in a variety of ways, including a retail campaign featuring one billion special edition Michael Jackson Bad 25 Pepsi cans, live events, and opportunities for fans to access special edition merchandise and new music from BAD 25.

The BAD album was the third Michael Jackson album produced by Quincy Jones and was originally released on August 31, 1987. It was monumental in many ways; Michael wrote nine of the album's eleven tracks and received co-producer credit for the entire album. The album was #1 around the world, made history with five consecutive #1 singles on the Billboard chart, produced ten chart-topping singles, nine ground breaking short films and to date, the Bad album has generated over 45 Million units in sales. BAD was nominated for six Grammys and won two; the album earned Michael the first-ever Video Vanguard Award at the MTV VMA Awards. Songs on the original album are: “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Speed Demon,” “Liberian Girl,” “Just Good Friends” featuring Stevie Wonder, “Another Part of Me,” “Man in the Mirror,” “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Dirty Diana,” “Smooth Criminal,” with “Leave Me Alone” added to the album once released.

The BAD World Tour was Michael’s first concert tour as a solo artist. The legendary tour included 123 concerts attended by more than 4.4 million fans over sixteen months. When it concluded, the tour had shattered all previous touring records for attendance and total gross revenue adding three new entries in the Guinness World Records for the largest grossing tour in history, the tour with the largest attended audience and the most sold out shows at Wembley Stadium.

More details on this and other exciting projects relating to BAD’s 25th anniversary will be announced soon.
